PRAIRIE
CROSSING, Grayslake, IL
STUDIO 1032 developed
three new phases of town planning working with the Prairie Crossing Conservancy,
ecologists, environmentalists, developers, realtors, zoning boards and homeowners.
We collaborated in planning for a commercial, retail and public transportation
center establishing the viability for an ecological development that respects
the landscape, protects the environment, builds community, conserves energy,
establishes investment potential, and engenders lifelong learning.
Starting with an historic journal of past proposals for the land, we proposed
three new phases:
Historic Hedgerow of
homes
Prairie Crossing Town Center of
increased density and mixed use, Station Center
joining new commercial, housing, and services
with transit lines to downtown Chicago, O’Hare airport and Lake County
sites.
STUDIO 1032 facilitated
a regional design charrette
inviting thirty local architects to develop new housing prototypes. Working
with Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Chicago, we created Design
Guidelines and assisted realtors, developers and
prospective home owners in evaluating the proposals.
STUDIO 1032 presented five regional production
home prototypes relating prairie views to the open plan, horizontal grounding,
and detail articulation of Arts and Crafts, Bungalow, Farmhouse, and Prairie
School vernaculars. The Brooks,
the Bradford and
the Prairie House
have been built.
STUDIO 1032 continued to provided architecture,
planning and design services for the community at Prairie Crossing including
adaptive re-use of existing farm architecture, proposed office buildings, promotional
illustrations, website design, and construction document review of existing
housing prototypes.
1998-2006
STUDIO 1032 Memorial Turnbull Firepit was completed
in 2004.
